My apartment complex replaced my water heater last month, I had the gas company come this week and...?

they said the ventilation system was not hooked up properly and carbon monoxide could leak into my apt. They fixed it, but I don't want it to happen to someone else. It was just by chance I had the gas company come out. Is there anything I can do to make sure it doesn't happen again? (agencies to contact...etc).
