It seems that your guy 'doesn't want to hurt your feelings', but you were moving on without him. I think that's what he saw...you living your life fine without him. I would ask him where this relationship is going. If he broke up with you because of religious differences and those differences are still there...then, what has changed. He has more freedom to talk to other women without the labels of bf/gf. You were moving on without him and if he doesn't want to be with you, really, then you'll be just fine without him.
